About Coach Al Garrett
Coach Al Garrett, an accomplished Tennis Professional and co-founder of the Youth Development Association, Inc. (YDA), serves as the organization's Executive Director. With decades of experience in tennis coaching and community leadership, Coach Garrett has been a driving force in using the transformative power of tennis to enrich the lives of countless young people.

Tennis Leadership and Accomplishments
Coach Garrett’s distinguished career in tennis leadership began as the Director of Tennis at Dublin Park Tennis Center for the City of Madison, AL, where he served from 1993 to 2006. During his tenure, he was instrumental in developing a wide range of tennis programs, turning the center into a thriving hub for players of all ages and skill levels. His key contributions include establishing the USTA/NJTL Chapter, Junior Team Tennis, competitive tournament teams, and programs for beginners through to advanced players.

Professional Certifications and High School Coaching
As a certified tennis professional, Coach Garrett holds long-standing certifications from the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) since 1993 and the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) since 1995. Additionally, he is certified by the Alabama High School Athletics Association. In 2015, he returned to high school tennis coaching, joining the team at St. John Paul II Catholic High School in Huntsville, AL. Since 2021, he has served as the coach at Mae Jemison High School, continuing to mentor and inspire young athletes both on and off the court.

Service and Ministry
In addition to his tennis expertise, Coach Garrett is deeply committed to his ministry. Licensed in 2004 and ordained in 2005 by The Huntsville Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America, he brings his spiritual leadership to every aspect of his life and work.

Leadership at YDA
As Executive Director of YDA, Coach Garrett provides visionary leadership to this USTA-affiliated, non-profit organization. YDA’s mission, “S.E.T. - Soaring in Education/Etiquette through Tennis,” embodies Coach Garrett’s dedication to serving under-resourced communities. Through YDA, he helps provide tutoring, mentorship, and leadership development, all integrated with tennis programming and community service.

Family and Community Engagement
Beyond the tennis courts, Coach Garrett is a devoted family man, sharing a strong bond with his wife, Ruth J. Garrett, and their five children: Diane, Marcus, Brian, Angela, and Calvin. He is also a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren, who bring him great joy.​

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
In recognition of his leadership and advocacy, Coach Garrett has been appointed Chairperson of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the Alabama Tennis Association. His dedication to fostering inclusivity and diversity in the tennis community is a testament to his unwavering commitment to positive social change.
